WISH Cumbria - Winter Newsletter 2018

WISH Cumbria has had an array of exciting and topical events within the past few months

WISH Cumbria has had an array of exciting and topical events within the past few months.  We held an event in March to highlight ‘Taking Action to End Domestic Abuse’ with speakers from a local women’s hostel and also Cumbrian support group, Safety Net.  All of our attendees were very kind and brought along toiletries to donate to the local women’s hostel which were greatly received.  This was an incredibly important event with a powerful presentation increasing attendees understanding of the wider impact of domestic abuse and the other forms of abuse that take place behind closed doors.  This session resonated with our group and we are looking to build another similar event.

We marked the Alzheimer’s Society’s Third Annual Cupcake Day in June with talks from a representative from the Alzheimer’s Society and also the Chief Executive of one of our local Housing Association, Eden Housing Association who have a fantastic supported facility in Cumbria.  Not only this, but we held a Dementia Friends Information Session with everybody in attendance becoming Dementia Friends.  We had fantastic local support for this event with Sainsbury’s providing cupcakes for all attendees to enjoy whilst networking.  We also raised money for the Alzheimer’s Society with a raffle, all prizes donated were from local Cumbrian businesses.

Our Speaking with Confidence event in July was presented by Marcus Orlovsky, an inspirational, international conference speaker and TedX talk’s veteran.  Marcus shared his tips and techniques to help us speak with confidence and purpose.  It was a really fun and interactive session with the entertaining Marcus but also provided attendees with important skills for success.  The event was kindly sponsored by Mitie Property Services UK Limited.

We are looking forward to our last event of the year on the 1st November which is a workshop with Janet Richmond of Just Libra.  Janet is a HR, Leadership and Development Consultant who will talking to our group about ‘Embracing Change’.  Janet, who has worked a lot in the housing sector, will give an understanding of how change is implemented and provide tools and techniques for managing our won and others reaction to change.  Watch this space for our write up from this event.
